How Major Raja Aziz Bhatti held the BRB Canal against overwhelming force in September 1965, earning Pakistan's highest military honor.
In September 1965, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti, commander of Alpha Company, 17th Punjab Regiment, held the strategically critical Burki sector near Lahore against overwhelming Indian armor and infantry for six consecutive days. His refusal to fall back preserved Lahore’s outer defense line, earning him Pakistan’s highest military honor, the Nishan-e-Haider.
The dawn of September 6, 1965, radically altered the military dynamic across the South Asian subcontinent. Indian armed forces launched a multi-pronged assault across the international border, aiming directly for the historic city of Lahore. The central thrust targeted the village of Burki and the vital Bambawali-Ravi-Bedian (BRB) Canal, a key artificial water obstacle designed precisely to delay armoured thrusts into the Punjab plain.
Major Raja Aziz Bhatti was deployed on the forward edge of this battle area. Commanding Alpha Company of the 17 Punjab Regiment, his primary operational objective was clear yet formidable: hold the enemy advance east of the canal for as long as possible to enable Pakistans primary defensive positions behind the waterway to fortify fully.
Equipped with light infantry weaponry, anti-tank recoilless rifles, and limited mortar support, Alpha Company faced a numerically superior force supported by heavy armor and intense artillery bombardment. For five days and five nights without sleep, Major Bhatti moved between platoon defensive positions, redistributing ammunition, supervising defensive firing sectors, and personally directing artillery fire onto advancing columns.
To understand the tactical discipline displayed at Burki, one must examine the background of Raja Aziz Bhatti. Born in Hong Kong in 1928, where his father served in the local police service, Bhatti spent his early years in East Asia before his family relocated to Punjab prior to the partition of British India in 1947.
He enlisted in the Pakistan Army and quickly distinguished himself at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul. As a cadet in the 1st PMA Long Course, he demonstrated exceptional academic, physical, and tactical proficiency, graduating in 1950 with both the Sword of Honour and the Norman Medal—an unprecedented double distinction in the academies early history.
Colleagues and subordinates described him as an officer defined by rigorous discipline, meticulous terrain analysis, and a calm demeanor under pressure. These characteristics were put to the ultimate test during the opening week of September 1965.
By September 8, the pressure on the Burki sector reached a critical threshold. Enemy infantry, backed by armor units, attempted repeated assaults to seize the vital bridgehead over the BRB Canal. Major Bhatti recognized that maintaining an forward observation post was essential to directing friendly 25-pounder artillery batteries effectively against enemy troop concentrations.
Rather than directing operations from a reinforced bunker behind the lines, he continuously positioned himself at elevated vantage points, directly exposed to small arms fire, tank shells, and heavy artillery barrages. On multiple occasions, when enemy elements penetrated the outer wire of his companys defensive perimeter, Major Bhatti personally organized counter-attacks to clear the trenches.
On September 10, when his commanding officer offered to rotate his battle-weary company out of the front line for rest and replenishment, Major Bhatti explicitly refused. He insisted that he and his men would remain in position until the threat was entirely neutralized, stating that leaving the sector at such a critical moment would compromise the integrity of the entire canal line.
On the morning of September 12, 1965, the engagement entered its final, fatal phase. Major Bhatti was standing atop an elevated canal embankment, binoculars in hand, calling in precise coordinates to silence an advancing enemy tank formation that posed a direct threat to the canal crossing.
Because of his elevated position, he was visible to enemy gunners. An enemy tank shell struck his location directly, killing him instantly. He was 37 years old. His relentless six-day stand bought the crucial time needed for reinforcing units to solidify the defensive lines along the BRB Canal, effectively halting the push toward Lahore.
Major Raja Aziz Bhatti was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistans highest award for military valor in combat. His tactical execution at Burki remains a core case study in infantry defense doctrine across military staff colleges nationwide.

At the Pakistan Military Academy, he won both the Sword of Honor and the Norman Medal. Following his martyrdom in 1965, he was awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest military honor.
The BRB Canal served as a crucial defense line protecting Lahore from direct armorial thrusts from the Indian border, functioning as a key obstacle to stall enemy tanks and infantry.
