Biography
Muammar Gaddafi (1942-2011) ruled Libya from 1969 until his overthrow and death in 2011. He came to power in a military coup against King Idris and established the Jamahiriya system of government. His 42-year rule saw Libya transformed from a monarchy to a unique socialist state. He was killed during the Libyan Civil War in Sirte.
